Almeida defeated Nasrudin Nasrudinov via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:49 of Round 2 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters awarded an official UFC contract.
Despite entering as high as a +170 betting underdog against a Russia-based wrestling specialist, it was Almeida who controlled the great majority of the grappling exchanges, leaving Nasrudinov in a state of complete shock. According to the telecast, Almeida could have became a professional boxer at one point, but he's focused the majority of his training of late on jiu-jitsu competitions. He claims to fight light a Russian, and showed just that here. He used several different techniques to get his opponent to the mat, plus a wide frame and solid base kept Nasrudinov down. Almeida was able to take his back in Round 2, flatten him out and get a relatively seamless finish. There's room for immediate advancement in the UFC's 205-pound division, and the 30-year-old Almeida certainly fits the profile of a fighter who can put together an early win streak.
