2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mullens returns for this third season in Minnesota, but this year he's the third string QB, backing up Sam Darnold and first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy instead of Kirk Cousins, who left for Atlanta. Mullens was his typical mediocre self in five games (three starts) after Cousins suffered a season-ending injury last year. He threw seven TD passes and eight interceptions, but he posted an 8.8 YPA as his three starts resulted in 303, 396 and 411 yards. Mullens will need an injury to Darnold or McCarthy to see time under center. In that case, he’ll have a solid group of skill players to help him, but he’s not a rushing threat and still a middling passer, and as such doesn’t have much upside, even for two-QB leagues. Now backing up Darnold, not Cousins
Mullens looks set to work as the top backup in 2024 to Sam Darnold, who agreed to a one-year deal with Minnesota on Monday, Christian Gonzales of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Kirk Cousins (Achilles) moving on to the Falcons, Mullens and 2023 fifth-round pick Jaren Hall are currently the Vikings' only options at quarterback behind Darnold, though the team could further bolster the position in free agency or through the 2024 NFL Draft. Now heading into the final year of his contact and having spent the last two seasons as a backup for Minnesota, Mullens could be cut with the Vikings taking on only $375,000 in dead money, but the team may see value in a veteran quarterback who's already familiar with the present offensive scheme.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could be benched
Coach Kevin O'Connell would not name a starting quarterback for Minnesota's Week 17 matchup against the Packers on Tuesday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mullens has started Minnesota's last two games and thrown for a combined 714 yards with four touchdowns. However, he's also turned the ball over six times and the team has gone 0-2. In an effort to save the Vikings' season, O'Connell could elect to turn to Jaren Hall or Josh Dobbs, though the former is the more likely option to potentially replace Mullens.

The Raiders traded Mullens to the Vikings last August, with the quarterback serving as the primary reserve to Kirk Cousins during the 2022 season. Undrafted back in 2017, Mullens ended up appearing in four games in mop-up duty and completed 21 of 25 passes for 224 yards, one touchdown and one interception. While those are not overly impressive numbers, he demonstrated he's at least a steady hand as the backup.
