Drake Maye

21-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Patriots made Maye the third overall pick in this year’s draft, hoping he’s the QB of the future that Mac Jones failed to be. Jones, the 15th overall pick in 2021, flamed out and was traded in March to Jacksonville. The Patriots signed veteran Jacoby Brissett, with whom Maye will compete to start this season. Even if Maye isn’t the Week 1 starter, he likely will be under center at some point this year. At 6-4, 223, Maye has prototypical size for a quarterback, with a strong and talented arm that can both attack defenses deep and slip balls into tight windows. Scouts praised his field vision and anticipation, and he’s an athletic dual-threat who rushed for 1,147 yards and 16 TDs his last two years at North Carolina. Maye is a bit of gun-slinger, prone to an ill-advised pass, and inconsistent mechanics and poor footwork at times hurt his accuracy, especially on routine short throws. But the Patriots have time to develop that while Brissett handles QB duty. The bigger issue is a lack of playmakers to target in the passing game. The WR depth chart is topped by Kendrick Borne, who is coming off an ACL injury, and Demario Douglas, a 2023 sixth-round pick who failed to score last season. Second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk might already be the best wide receiver and tight end Hunter Henry could be the No. 2 target. Maye at least gives the Patriots a good start to the post-Bill Belichick era. Read Past Outlooks
Will compete with Brissett
QBNew England Patriots
May 1, 2024
Head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that Maye and Jacoby Brissett are slated to compete for the Patriots' starting quarterback job in the coming months, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is no doubt viewed as the team's quarterback of the future, but given his limited experience (just 26 collegiate starts) along with the fact that he doesn't turn 22 years old until August, he could work behind Brissett early on during his professional career. With that in mind, Maye's standing in redraft leagues isn't as high as it is in dynasty formats, but the North Carolina's product's upside is undeniable, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star signal-caller.

Not guaranteed starting job
QBNew England Patriots
April 30, 2024
Maye will compete with Jacoby Brissett for the starting quarterback job in New England, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots selected Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and reportedly rebuffed offers from other teams looking to move up. However, he's still viewed as a relatively raw prospect after starting 26 games across the last two seasons at North Carolina. Brissett is a steady leader of a pro offense, so while Maye is the future at the position in New England, Brissett could start for a significant portion of the 2024 campaign.
